Horsham to Billingshurst

A 10 mile linear walk from Horsham rail station to Billingshurst rail station in West Sussex, forming Part 22 of the Sussex Hospices Trail. This long distance walk takes in both the undulating countryside of the Sussex Weald and the market town of Horsham. On route you will pass the historic Christ Hospital, one of the oldest schools in England, walk along the scenic Downs Way Link and West Sussex Literary Trail and take in interesting estates and ancient woodland. The return leg can be completed with a single 10 minute train journey.

Difficulty

The Weald is well known for its mud and after rain the trail can be heavy going in places. You will need to negotiate a number of stiles, kissing gates, narrow footbridges and footpaths, short sections of steps and cross one pedestrian level crossing. There are a few road crossings that need care when crossing and two short sections of road which are only accessible via grass and road side verge. The first stretch of the route takes you through the busy town of Horsham but this soon opens up into woodland and open fields. You are likely to come across livestock in some of the fields so take particular care with dogs. Allow 5 hours.

Accessing the Trail

There are several ways to follow the Trail!

On paper

You can download and print the PDF leaflet for your walk at the top of this page. These include turn-by-turn directions, photos and a simplified map. For extra safety, we recommend that you carry an Ordnance Survey map of the area too.

On an app

If you already have the iFootpath App and have stayed logged in, then you can continue to download the walks until September 1st 2019. However, it will no longer be updated and may cease working after that.

However there is now a new home for the walks on the AllTrails App so we strongly recommend that even if you have iFootpath you also get the free version of the AllTrails App (where the walks are already downloaded and where the directions are called Waypoints). This version of AllTrails will work as long as there is an internet (3G/4G) signal.

Note: within the AllTrails App you have the option to pay a subscription to upgrade to AllTrails Pro. This gives you the ability to follow the guides without using any internet data in areas where there is no 3G/4G coverage.

On a GPS device

If you have a Garmin or another GPS-based App e.g. the Ordnance Survey App, you can download the GPX File for your chosen walk from our website to use on these devices. (Please note that the GPX Files are for personal use only and must not be published on any other platform)
